How heating finance works in Scotland

Getting a new boiler, air source heat pump or hybrid heating system through Scottish Energy Efficiency is designed to be straightforward and straightforward. We arrange everything on your behalf — the survey, the written quote, and the installation through our MCS-certified partners — so you deal with one point of contact from start to finish. Loans available, subject to status. Here is how the process works, step by step.

01

Make an enquiry

Get in touch by phone, WhatsApp, or our online quote form. Tell us your postcode, your current heating, and what you're interested in — a new boiler, an air source heat pump, or a hybrid system. We'll confirm whether we cover your area and book a survey at a time that suits you.

02

No-obligation survey

A surveyor visits your home and assesses your heating and hot water needs. For a boiler, they'll check the existing system, flue position and controls. For a heat pump or hybrid system, they'll calculate room-by-room heat loss, inspect radiators and insulation, and assess space for the external unit. There is no charge for the survey.

03

Written quote with finance options

After the survey you receive a written, itemised quote covering the equipment, installation and finance terms. Loans available, subject to status — any finance options available to you are set out clearly, with terms confirmed before you sign. Take the quote away, compare it, and decide in your own time. There is no obligation and no pressure.

04

MCS-certified installation

If you accept the quote, the installation is scheduled and carried out by one of our MCS-certified partner installers. A standard boiler replacement is usually completed within a day; heat pump and hybrid installations may take longer. We remain your point of contact throughout, coordinating the installer so you don't have to.

Making your enquiry

The first step is simply getting in touch. You can call us on 0141 230 0198, message us on WhatsApp, or fill in the online quote form on this page. We'll ask for your postcode, your current heating setup (for example, a combi boiler, a system boiler with a cylinder, electric heating, or oil), and what you're interested in. You don't need to know exactly what you want — if you're unsure whether a heat pump or a boiler replacement is the right choice, tell us and we'll discuss it with you at the survey.

Our team is based in Dundee and covers mainland Scotland and the islands. When you enquire we'll confirm whether we can arrange a survey in your area and, if so, book a convenient date. Surveys are typically arranged within a few days of your enquiry, depending on your location and availability.

The survey explained

The survey is the most important part of the process because it's how we establish exactly what your property needs. A boiler survey is relatively quick: the surveyor inspects the existing boiler, checks the flue route, the gas supply pipe, the radiators and the controls, and confirms the output required to heat your home and provide hot water. They'll also check whether any upgrades are needed, such as a larger gas pipe, a magnetic system filter, or a system flush.

A heat pump or hybrid survey is more detailed. The surveyor calculates the heat loss of each room — measuring room dimensions, window sizes, wall types, and insulation levels — to determine the total heat output the system must deliver at the coldest expected outside temperature. They inspect the existing radiators to see whether they're large enough to work with a heat pump's lower flow temperatures, or whether upgrades are needed. They assess space for the external heat pump unit (which needs a minimum clearance for airflow), and for a hot water cylinder if one is required. For a hybrid system, they confirm the condition of the existing boiler and whether it can be retained.

The survey is carried out at no cost to you and with no obligation. You're welcome to ask questions during the visit — the surveyor will explain their findings and what they mean for your options.

Receiving your written quote

After the survey, you receive a written quote. The quote itemises the equipment (boiler, heat pump, cylinder, controls), the labour, and any additional works such as radiator upgrades or a system flush. If you've expressed interest in finance, the quote includes the finance options available to you. Loans available, subject to status — this means finance is offered subject to affordability and credit checks, and the specific terms (monthly amount, number of payments, total payable) are confirmed in writing before you agree to anything.

There is no obligation to accept the quote. Take it away, read it carefully, compare it with other quotes if you wish, and decide in your own time. If you have questions about any part of the quote, call us and we'll talk you through it. We would rather you make the right decision for your home than feel rushed.

The installation

If you decide to go ahead, we coordinate the installation with our MCS-certified partner. The installation date is arranged at a time that suits you. For a like-for-like boiler replacement, the work is usually completed within a day: the old boiler is removed, the new one is installed, the system is commissioned and tested, and the engineer registers the boiler with the manufacturer for the warranty. For an air source heat pump or hybrid system, the installation is more involved — the external unit is mounted, the internal components and hot water cylinder are installed, radiators may be upgraded, and the system is commissioned and balanced. This typically takes two to four days depending on the scope.

We remain your point of contact throughout the installation. If you have any concerns, call us rather than dealing with the installer directly, and we'll make sure they're addressed. After the installation is complete, the system is handed over to you with an explanation of how the controls work and what maintenance is needed.
